I
am Rohini Fernandes, a clinical psychologist and a certified
practitioner of Animal-Assisted Therapy from the University of
North Texas, USA and also from Delta Society, USA. I am also a
certified counsellor from St Xavier Institute of Counselling
Psychology and a certified practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic
Programming.
I have been training dogs since the last six
years in basic obedience, as guard dogs and I also work with
dogs with behaviour problems. I also train and enter dogs for
obedience shows held by the Indian National Kennel Club, since
the past five years and have won numerous prizes at these
shows with my dogs in obedience, performance and breed
categories.
This gorgeous Golden Retriever by my side is
my dog, Angel. She is my cotherapist and the inspiration behind
the name “Animal Angels Foundation”.
The idea of using animals to help people
first came to me during my fieldwork in my M.A. where we had to
work in the Psychiatric wards of various hospitals. I would
always think of how it would be easier to connect with clients
and get better and quicker responses if I could have a dog
sitting by my side rather than just apply the conventional
therapy that we had to use.
I researched this area and decided to combine
my knowledge of dogs with my training in the field of psychology
to use “Animal-Assisted Therapy” with my clients.
The positive results encouraged me to specialize in this area.
Having Angel has only strengthened my belief that animals can
bring about a lot of positive changes in a person’s life. I
started Animal Angels Foundation in January 2005, after Angel
finished her training as a therapy dog.
About six months after I started with “Animal
Angels Foundation” I met Radhika, who shared my passion for
animals and who also strongly believed in this therapy. We
decided to work together and reach out to as many people as we
could through Animal Angels Foundation. |
