Animal - assisted activities (AAA) involves trained therapy animals in various environments like schools, hospitals, old age homes & orphanages to enable the people there to pet and play with these trained animals in a safe, supervised and therapeutic environment. A trained volunteer can perform AAA and it is not necessary that a medical / human service professional be present. It is more of a social visit and is casual and less structured that a therapy session. No goals are structured for a visit. |
For example, a therapy dog visits an orphanage once a week where the children play games with her, pet her and talk to her. There are no treatment goals set for this weekly interaction. Just having a dog coming specially to meet them makes these boys and girls feel loved and wanted. |
